A Dream of a Castle
The story of The 506 begins with a Swiss gentleman of singular vision and extraordinary precision. For as long as he could remember, he had carried one dream — to build a castle of his own. Not an imitation, but a true European fortress, faithful in spirit, structure and craft. That dream would become the foundation beneath every stone of this house.
Born from a French Palace
Rather than design from imagination alone, the owner traced the footprint of a genuine castle — one carefully dismantled in France years earlier — and rebuilt it here, stone by stone, on its original blueprint. The layout you walk today is the layout of that French palace, faithfully preserved and lovingly resurrected on African soil.
A Decade of Devotion
Construction spanned more than ten years — closer to twelve — and nothing was rushed. The owner's meticulous obsession with straightness, proportion and integrity produced a structure that is, in the truest sense, bombproof: reinforced throughout, sheathed in multi-layered glass engineered for heat and security. A fortress built to endure for centuries, not seasons.
Materials with a Memory
Almost everything you see, everything you touch, carries a history. Hand-cut floor tiles imported from Italy. Flooring of American redwood — a timber now all but impossible to source. Ironwork, fireplace bricks and light fittings salvaged from the original French palace, cut into pieces, shipped across the world and reassembled by hand. This is a house assembled from the relics of another.
A Palace by Any Measure
Under roof, the structure covers 3,671 square metres — a footprint large enough to be classified as a palace by international standard. The streams and small dams that thread the grounds echo the moat of the castles that inspired it; the archway at the entrance mirrors the original gateway. Turrets rise to the roofline — deliberately kept low so as not to flaunt the castle within — while beneath your feet run underground passageways and hidden cellars.
The Long Road to a License
Transforming a private palace into a boutique hotel was no small undertaking. It took seven full years to secure the licence that would open these doors to the world — seven years of patience, regulation and unwavering belief that this extraordinary place was meant to be shared.
Five-Star Boutique Deluxe
That patience was rewarded with a singular honour: The 506 was named the very first Five-Star Boutique Deluxe facility in Africa — the highest rating the continent offers. In many parts of the world this same standard would be recognised as six-star. Here, it stands as the pinnacle, and we remain immensely proud to have been the first to reach it.
A Legacy to Share
And so a Swiss gentleman's dream of a castle became a palace, and a palace became a home for guests from across the world. Every stone, every beam, every tile holds a story — and we welcome you to walk among them, to touch that history, and to share in it with us.
